Lantie Foster Design on NPR: How U.S. Tariffs Are Impacting Fashion
This past week, I had the incredible opportunity to be interviewed by NPR for a segment on how U.S.-China tariffs are impacting the fashion industry. As a New York-based freelance fashion designer, I’ve built my career creating garments for many diverse brands, the Hollywood Red Carpet, the hospitality sector and even pet design—and this interview shed light on the behind-the-scenes challenges we face.
During the segment, I spoke about the reality of sourcing materials, the rising costs due to tariffs, and how these changes could affect both independent designers and major fashion brands alike. With 30% of fashion production still based in China, price fluctuations could reshape how and where designers manufacture.
One key takeaway? The uncertainty has a price. Even before seeing direct cost increases, designers like myself are being forced to anticipate how these trade shifts will affect future collections. This is why smart design, budgeting, and adaptability are more crucial than ever in today’s market.
